Sony has confirmed that work on a console to succeed the PlayStation 3 is well underway.
Masaru Kato, Sony's vice president and chief financial officer, confirmed the console's existence during an investor's meeting today via conference call.
"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," Katu said, "but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."
This is a clear contradiction to what Kaz Hirai said recently, that the company isn't looking to replace the PlayStation 3 anytime soon. They aren't anywhere close to completing their ten year cycle for the system.
There's no doubt that PlayStation 4 isn't close to releasing, though. Sony probably won't even talk about it at this year's E3 conference. Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have a few years left in their life cycle.
