Activists are our future leaders, and we can't put them all behind bars

Interesting op-ed over at The Guardian about the arrest of Topiary, the future of online activism, and criminalization of digital sit-ins.

Excerpt:
Future political leaders are often seasoned through protest and activism. This is naturally moving online. The current draconian censorship rules criminalise dissent in this medium. Without reform, when the time comes for a new generation to take the reins, we may find all too many behind bars.
From the political and legal perspectives, it's very interesting to look at current Anons as future leaders (and even members of government). Perhaps our representatives having a more nuanced view of the internet than a series of tubes would avoid asinine situations like mass censorship and corporate dominance of communications platforms.

It also appears that the AnonymousIRC twitter account, which isrun by some of the LulzSec guys, is now calling to "Free Topiary," indicating that yes, it appears he was arrested.
